Justice PC Ghose appointed India's first Lokpal
New Delhi, March 19 (RNI): Former Supreme Court judge Justice Pinaki Chandra Ghose was on Tuesday appointed as the country's first Lokpal, the anti-corruption ombudsman.

The appointment has come through five years after the Lokpal Act was notified for effecting a panel of ombudsmen to look into cases of corruption and maladministration by public servants.

A selection committee, comprising the Prime Minister, Chief Justice of India , Lok Sabha Speaker and an eminent jurist, finalised Justice Ghose's name in a meeting last week after the Supreme Court set a deadline.

Former Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) chief Archana Ramasundaram, ex-Maharashtra Chief Secretary Dinesh Kumar Jain, Mahender Singh and Indrajeet Prasad Gautam have been appointed as non-judicial members of Lokpal, according to an official communique.

Justices Dilip B Bhosale, Pradip Kumar Mohanty, Abhilasha Kumari and Ajay Kumar Tripathi have been appointed as judicial members in the anti-corruption ombudsman, the statement by Rashtrapati Bhavan said.

These appointments were recommended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led selection committee and approved by President Ram Nath Kovind. "The above appointments will take effect from the dates they assume charge of their respective offices," it said.

Justice Ghose, 66, retired as Supreme Court judge in May 2017 after a tenure of four years. He is a member of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) since June 29, 2017.

What makes the Lokpal powerful is the authority under the law to investigate complaints against current and former prime ministers, Union ministers, members of Parliament, government employees and employees of public sector undertakings, and key employees of non-governmental organisations receiving more than Rs 10 lakh a year in foreign contributions, among others.

The Lokpal has to work in tandem with the Central Vigilance Commission, it can direct any investigating agency, including the CBI, to look into allegations of graft under the Prevention of Corruption Act.

The appointment of Justice Ghose, however, has kicked up a controversy with the process not having a voice of the opposition.

Congress leader in the Lok Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge was called in as a special invitee to the selection committee meeting but he refused to attend. Kharge pointed that a special invitee would not have any rights to vote and that the opposition was being made "voiceless" in a critical matter.

Elephant herd sparks panic in Champua area

Bhubaneswar, June 23 (RNI): Panic has gripped residents of a few villages in Keonjhar district as a herd of 18 elephants razed property and crops early this morning. Sources said a herd of 18 elephants entered to Padmapur and Radukela area under Champua forest range early this morning and destroyed property and paddy crops. This led to panic among the villagers who informed the Forest department to keep the elephants at bay and protect their crop as well as property. The exact figure of damaged paddy can be confirmed after the elephant herd leave the area. Meanwhile, forest officials managed to chase away the animals. During their movement, no untoward incident was reported other than extensive damage to paddy crop, sources said.

बाड़मेर, 23 जून (आरएनआई) | बालोतरा के पास जसोल में तेज तूफान से कथा आयोजन का पांडाला गिर गया। इसमें 12 लोगों की मौत हो गई है। जबकि 50 से अधिक लोग घायल हो गए। घायलों को सरकारी व निजी वाहनों से अस्पताल में पहुंचाया जा रहा है। कथा आयोजन में करीब 200 से अधिक लोग मौजूद थे। हादसे के बाद बचाव और राहत कार्य शुरु कर दिया है। पुलिस महानिरीक्षक रेंज जोधपुर सचिन मित्तल ने 12 की मौत की पुष्टि की है।श्री राणी भटियाणी मंदिर संस्थान जसोल के तत्वावधान में राम कथा का आयोजन एक दिन पहले शुरू हुआ। जहां अंतरराष्ट्रीय ख्याति प्राप्त कथाकार मुरलीधर महाराज प्रवचन सुना रहे थे। अचानक तेज आंधी आने से पण्डाल गिर गया और पण्डाल में दबने से 12 लोगों की मौत हो गई। अचानक हुए घटनाक्रम के बाद मौके पर अफरा-तफरी मच गई। वहीं कई लोग पण्डाल में विद्युत लाइन की चपेट में आने से घायल हो गए। हादसें के बाद मौके पर बड़ी संख्या में प्रशासनिक अमले के अधिकारी पहुंचे और बचाव कार्य शुरू हुआ। घायलों को नाहटा अस्पताल बालोतरा पहुंचाया। जहां घायलों का उपचार चल रहा है।हादसे की जानकारी के बाद शहर के निजी चिकित्सालयों के चिकित्सक बड़ी संख्या में सरकारी चिकित्सालय पहुंचे और घायलों का उपचार शुरु कर दिया है। हादसे की जानकारी पर पूर्व मंत्री अमराराम, नगर परिषद रतन खत्री, भाजपा जिला अध्यक्ष महेश चौहान सहित विभिन्न संगठनों संस्थाओं के पदाधिकारी चिकित्सालय पहुंचे। घटना की जानकारी ली। वहीं चिकित्सकों को बेहतर उपचार व्यवस्था करने के निर्देश दिए।
